Boeing to offer eco-paint to airlines

Boeing, the world's leading aerospace company, has announced that it will soon offer airlines chrome-free decorative paint and primer in response to pressure to make airline paint more environmentally friendly.

Airlines have been under pressure to stop using chrome in their paint from environmental groups and in response, Boeing delivered a 777-300 extended range airplane to KLM Royal Dutch Airlines this week, complete with chrome-free primer and chrome-free exterior paint.

The Chicago-based airline giant said that removing the chrome from the paint and from the primer "eliminates the need for special handling of paint waste and clean-up and designated off site disposal areas."

The utilisation of non-chrome paint and primer will be first applied to 14 other airplanes before going fleet-wide. There will then be an "in-service evaluation" to assess the option of making it a standard option in the future.

Boeing is the world's leading aerospace company and the largest manufacturer of commercial jetliners and military aircraft combined, with capabilities in helicoptors, electronic and defence systems, missiles, satellites, launch vehicles and advanced information and communication systems.
