Natural disaster


The full cost of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico to marine and coastal ecology is only just being realized. And while million dollar fines and compensation claims may dent the bottom line of BP and other companies admitting responsibility for ecological disasters, it still doesn’t seem enough. At least six million gallons of crude have spewed into the Gulf, though some scientists have said they believe the spill already surpasses the 11 million-gallon 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill off Alaska as the worst in US history.
