Sales and the 'Talent Magnet'

A lot is written about being a ‘Talent Magnet’, either as a company, or as President. It’s all good practice – listen, mentor, reward, provide clear goals and career maps. Good practice for the employer, but what about the employee?

Herzog celebrated 40 years in business on May 7, 2009. We are an industry leader in railroad construction and maintenance all across North America. We maintain major offices in Dallas, TX; St. Joseph, MO; and Long Beach, CA. Herzog works for all Class I and Shortline Railroads in North America and performs services in 38 states as well as Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. With consistent, strong growth, we are continually seeking to expand our operations globally. Herzog, ranked 188 on Engineering News Record’s (ENR) Top 400 Contractors for 2009, recorded total revenues of $384.6 million.

Safety and quality of work are key corporate goals Herzog emphasizes. For that reason, Herzog is frequently recognized for its safety record. Every day, we continue to strive for excellence. Our current EMR rating is considered EXCELLENT at .54. We provide unsurpassed quality of workmanship in the construction industry. The Herzog motto, "Safety First, Quality Always", is consistently applied to all project. Its importance is reiterated through daily/weekly meetings in addition to divisional training.

Our commitment to safety and quality is seen daily at our numerous railroad construction projects currently underway. These projects include the $192 million light rail project for DCTA in Lewisville, TX. This project consists of building 20 miles of FRA Class IV single track with approximately 43 highway grade crossings. Also, we are the managing partner for the $343 million West Corridor LRT 12 mile extension project in Denver, CO and are a key JV member for the $467 million DART Green Line LRT CMGC 3 project in Dallas, TX. These are just some of Herzog's significant rail construction, projects, with more in progress.

Herzog completed, the Stampede Pass Main Line in Washington State, a major project for BNSF. We rehabilitated 232 miles of main line, installed more than 300,000 cross ties, laid 60 track miles of CWR, and constructed 20 miles of new passing track. Originally, it was a 13-month project, but Herzog executed an accelerated 6-month construction program under a tightly sequenced live track operations environment. These are just a few examples of our extensive, nationwide railroad construction experience.

Herzog's light rail and commuter rail projects were all completed within the scheduled time frames and budgets for the original scope of work. These projects were all undertaken within Herzog's philosophy to manage projects with a goal of "zero" claims or litigation. We strive to identify problem areas in advance of events that would put the project's schedule and/or budget at risk. Maintaining open and consistent lines of communication with the Owner and the Owner's representatives is central for a successful project, and containment of cost and schedule.

Our sister company, Herzog Transit Services, Inc. (HTSI),  was formed in 1993 and is the only private contractor operating and maintaining commuter rail service in the United States (Trinity Rail Express, Dallas, TX; Altamont Commuter Express, Stockton, CA).

HTSI also held on-going contracts for commuter railroad ROW maintenance in California. These ROW maintenance contracts for the Southern California Regional Rail Authority (SCRRA) included maintaining trackwork and ROW maintenance for more than 450 miles of this mixed use system (commuter passenger and freight), including track inspection to FRA standards, FRA report filings, rail flaw detection, emergency repairs, and rail maintenance program determinations, recommendations, and execution.

Herzog's commuter rail operations, rolling stock maintenance, and trackwork inspection/maintenance to FRA standards, provides a unique experience enabling Herzog to apply these skills to any light rail project from design to a fully constructed project.

Herzog's railroad services division has played an important role in Herzog's growth since its inception in the late 1970s. As a leader in rail equipment - and with a corporate-wide commitment to innovation - Herzog has invested heavily in the design, manufacture, and operation of specialized equipment for the rail industry. Through our railcar-leasing program, Herzog owns more than 2,800 rail cars.

Herzog's civil construction division is the root of our organization, where we began operations as heavy/highway contractors in 1969.We continue to maintain a presence in this field of operation. Shortly thereafter, Herzog broadened our available services to include landfill construction/operations on a national scale. Throughout our history, we have continually demonstrated an ability to perform. Because of our experiences, Herzog offers a unique blend of dynamic leadership, innovative construction methods, and industry leading contractor/owner relationships.
